The opportunities to recreate during the winter months are plentiful. One can enjoy snowmobiling, cross country skiing, snowshoeing, and ice fishing. Wilson and Wlidhorse Reserviors are popular ice fishing spots. The Wildhorse area, Charleston and Gold Creek areas are generally the most reliable for good snowmobiling opportunities in normal snow years. With above average conditions, most areas of the District are covered by snow from mid-December though late January. Please use extra care while traveling during the winter. When traveling off the paved highways into areas with scattered snow across the road, the road bed will be frozen and firm in the morning, but can quickly turn muddy and impassable in the afternoon. Not only do you risk being stuck buy you will also destroy the road surface through rutting and erosion. When in doubt, don’t set out if a warm day is forecasted.
