Northeastern Nevada is beautiful place, but visitors must realize potential dangers while visiting. To help keep you safe here are a few important tips:
Always tell a friend or relative where you are going and when you plan to return.
Take a map of the area you are planning to visit.
Always carry a survival bag in your vehicle (flashlight, matches, flares, non-perishable food, extra warm clothes, a sleeping bag, extra drinking water). If you do become stranded, stay with your vehicle until help arrives.
Make sure your vehicle is in good working condition.
Be careful with fire because dry desert landscapes can easily catch fire.
Use fire rings and grates provided at the recreation sites.
Keep fire small, never leave a fire unattended, and douse your fire completely each evening and before you leave the site.
Also, be careful with your vehicle because hot catalytic converter can cause fires. Avoid driving through high grass or brush.
Watch out for ticks from early spring through early summer.
Watch out for rattlesnakes especially in rocky canyons along streams and abandoned buildings.
Cell Phones: Don't set off thinking that you will be able to call for help. You will find that most areas off the paved major access routes do not have cell phone coverage (unless you climb to a high mountain top).
Please remember that SAFETY comes 1ST!
