California Trail Center Weekend Openings

ELKO, Nev. – The California Trail Interpretive Center will open December 3 and 4 and 10 and 11, from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m.

The Center will feature activities for kids including playing with toys from the Trail era, dressing up in pioneer clothing and learning Indian sign language. Everyone can see the current state of Trail Center exhibits and learn more about the Trail Center’s Grand Opening and the 9th annual California Trail Days taking place on June 2 and 3, 2011.

“With the short days of winter coming on, we thought it would be fun to open the Center for those who may not have had the chance to visit this summer,” said Park Ranger Gary Koy. In addition to the activities, the California Trail Gift Shop will be open which stocks Trail era children’s toys, clothing, commemorative items and hard to find books on California Trail history.

The California Trail Interpretive Center, operated by the Bureau of Land Management, is located eight miles west of Elko, at Hunter exit 292. The Trail Center is currently closed for exhibit installation, with the exception of these two weekends, but welcomes school field trips, group visits and community organizations for meetings and tours on a prearranged basis.
