"History Along the Humboldt" Continues at the California Trail Center

Elko, Nev. — As part of the continuing series “History Along the Humboldt” the California Trail Interpretive Center brings to northeast Nevada the following presentations and workshops.

• Charles Greenhaw, Dean Emeritus of Great Basin Community College, will present “Images of the Gold Rush Trail in Nevada, 1849-50: The Diary and Art of J. Goldsborough Bruff” This program features illustrations taken directly from the diary of a “49er” drawn on the trail to California and will be presented Thursday, July 23 at 7 p.m.

• Shoshone basket weaving workshop using traditional and contemporary materials will be offered on Saturday, Aug. 1 from 9 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. (bring a lunch). Class size is limited so pre-registration by Wednesday, July 29 is required.

• On Wednesday, Aug. 12 at 7 p.m. California Trail Center Intern David Low will present “Burning up the Trail.” There is a lot more to know about fire on the California Trail than buffalo chips and cooking fires. Hear how native peoples and early pioneers used fire, and how the California Trail contributed to the rhythms of wildfire and growth seen in Nevada today.

• Sewing Academy – 1850, is a three-day costuming workshop that will be offered Friday evening, Sept. 18 through Sunday, Sept. 20. This workshop will offer information through lectures, discussions, and hands-on activities. Details regarding registration and fees have yet to be determined. Contact Gary Koy to find out more information on this fun interactive class.

The BLM manages more land - over 245 million acres - than any other Federal agency. This land, known as the National System of Public Lands, is primarily located in 12 Western states, including Alaska. The Bureau, with a budget of about $1 billion, also administers 700 million acres of sub-surface mineral estate throughout the nation. The BLM's multiple-use mission is to sustain the health and productivity of the public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations. The Bureau accomplishes this by managing such activities as outdoor recreation, livestock grazing, mineral development, and energy production, and by conserving natural, historical, cultural, and other resources on public lands.
