Public Lands Resource Advisory Council Members Needed For Northeastern Nevada

Nevada residents interested in the management and conservation of public lands are needed on the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Northeastern Great Basin Resource Advisory Council (RAC). Nominations will be accepted through April 14, 2008.

The Federal Land Policy and Management Act directs the Secretary of the Interior to involve the public in planning and discussion of issues related to management of BLM administered public lands. The three Resource Advisory Councils in Nevada help BLM with this community participation directive.

The RAC provides advice and recommendations to the BLM on land use planning and management of the public lands. Meetings are open to the public and public comment periods are included in each meeting. This forum provides an excellent opportunity for people to ask questions of the citizen-based advisory council or to make comments that may assist RACs in their planning efforts.

The positions for appointment on the Northeastern Great Basin RAC are one representative who holds a Federal grazing permit or leases and represents permittees or lessees within the area for the area served by the RAC; one representative for transportation and rights-of-way; one representative from a wild horse interest group; one representative for recreation; and one representative representing academia who works or teaches at a college in Nevada.

Individuals may nominate themselves or others. Nominations should be made on the appropriate background information nomination form, which is available at any BLM office, or on the internet at www.blm.gov/nv. Nominees should have demonstrated a commitment to collaborative resource decision-making. All nominations must include letters of reference from the represented interests or organizations, a completed background information nomination form, as well as any other information that speaks to the nominee’s qualifications. Nominees must be a resident of Nevada. Nominations are forwarded to the Secretary of the Interior who appoints members to serve three-year terms.

To submit a nomination, for questions about the Northeastern RAC or the application process, or to request a nomination form, contact Mike Brown at the BLM Elko District Office, 3900 East Idaho Street, Elko, NV 89801 or call 775-753-0386. People may also contact Stephanie Trujillo at the Ely District Office at 775-289-1800.
