Elko BLM and Eastern Nevada Agency BIA Hiring Emergency Firefighters and Support Workers for 2008 Fire Season
The Eastern Nevada Agency (ENA) of the Bureau of Indian Affairs is accepting applications through April 21, 2008 for on-call wildland firefighters for the upcoming fire season.
“We have had a lot of interest so far, and we would like to remind anyone that is interested to submit an application before the April 21st deadline,” said ENA Assistant Fire Management Officer Dylan Rader. “We hope to have enough firefighters to put together at least two hand crews this season. Since both crews are hired as on-call or on an emergency basis, employment is flexible and we encourage high school and college students to apply. This is a good chance for anyone who enjoys physically challenging outdoor work, likes to travel, and has some free time during the summer to earn some extra money.”
Firefighting hand crews consist of 20 men and women who travel to fires throughout the United States, up to 14 days at a time. They work long hours in remote locations constructing fire lines to halt the spread of wildfires. Hand crews are valuable resources that are in high demand nationwide during busy fire seasons, but depending on the severity of the fire season, they will also be used extensively on local fires. Over the past several years, ENA firefighters have fought fire across the western United States. In addition, they were assigned to the NASA Space Shuttle Columbia Recovery Effort in 2003 and Hurricane Katrina and Rita Recovery Efforts in the Gulf Coast region in 2005.
“Even though the crew is only activated and paid during fires or other emergencies, it is an excellent opportunity to gain wildland firefighter training and experience. Many of our crew members who continue with wildland firefighting as a career end up being hired on engine, helitack, and hotshot crews on a seasonal full-time basis,” Rader continued.
Firefighters must be 18 years old prior to June 1, 2008, must be a U.S. citizen, and must pass a pre-employment physical fitness test and drug test. The fitness test, or “pack test”, consists of a three mile hike over flat ground in 45 minutes or less, while carrying a 45 pound pack. All “rookie” firefighting applicants are required to attend a six day Basic Wildland Firefighter Training Course from June 8th through June 13th at the University of Nevada, Reno Fire Science Academy in Carlin. Applicants are paid to attend the training.
The Eastern Nevada Agency BIA is also accepting applications through May 1, 2008 for camp crew workers for the upcoming fire season. Camp crew members provide support for logistical needs in fire camps. Camp crew workers must be 16 years old prior to June 1, 2008, must be a U.S. citizen, and must pass a pre-employment physical fitness test and drug test. The fitness test consists of a one mile hike over flat ground in 16 minutes or less with no pack. Camp crews are also available for fire assignments both nation wide and locally.
“Our camp crews provide a very valuable and necessary support function to large fire camps across the western United States. Camp crews are the personnel who work in fire camp supporting a variety of logistical needs for firefighting crews. This is a great opportunity to gain experience in wildland fire, or for those who are interested in supporting our wildland fire suppression efforts but don’t want to work on the fire line. For those who have some extra time in the summer and are interested in working to protect our natural resources, this is a great opportunity,” Rader concluded.
