Barrick Goldstrike Betze Pit Expansion Project
Draft Supplemental EIS Is Available
A Draft Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) analyzing the impacts of Barrick Goldstrike, Inc.’s proposed Betze Pit Expansion Project in Eureka County is now available from the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Elko District Office. A public meeting with representatives of Barrick, the BLM, and ENSR, the company which prepared the draft document, will be held on Wed., Sept. 10, 5 to 7 p.m. at the Elko District Office.
The public is invited to review the document and provide comments by Oct. 6, 2008. A Notice of Availability was published in the Federal Register on Aug. 22.
The Betze Pit Expansion Project is an amendment to the Betze Project, an ongoing open pit mine on the Carlin Trend in Eureka and Elko Counties. The proposed Betze Pit Expansion Project includes expanding the existing open pit with a resulting larger post-mining pit lake, constructing the Clydesdale Waste Rock Facility, constructing the Goldstrike #3 Tailings Facility, and extending active mining employment at the mine for four years and extending processing employment at the mine for five years. Alternatives considered include a denial of the construction of the Clydesdale Waste Rock Facility in favor of continued expansion of the Bazza Waste Rock Facility.
Comments on the Draft Supplemental EIS should be addressed to the attention of Kirk Laird, Project Manager, and mailed to the BLM Elko District Office at 3900 East Idaho Street, Elko, NV 89801; faxed to (775) 753-0255; or e-mailed to email@example.com.
The Draft Supplemental EIS and the Federal Register Notice are available on the BLM webpage at www.blm.gov/nv and clicking the Elko District on the map. A limited number of hard copies are available at the BLM’s Elko District Office. Electronic and paper copies can be viewed at the Elko District Office.
A Final Supplemental EIS, which will review and consider comments on the Draft Supplemental EIS, is expected to be completed in early 2009.
