WILDFIRE UPDATE FOR ELKO COUNTY
Elko, Nev. - Four new lightning caused fires started Thursday in the Elko District. All starts were caught by local firefighters on scene, and no large acreage has been reported. All new starts were contained successfully, and were in the Lamoille to Jiggs area. All new fires had no issues, but the combination of hot temperatures, wind, and low humidity coupled with very dry fuels will keep firefighters braced through the weekend.
The 477 acre Murdock Fire is about 8 miles southwest of Montello, Nev. in steep and heavy fuels. Easton's Type III Incident Management Team is hoping for containment at end of shift on Saturday. Firefighters held the fire line amidst erratic wind behavior yesterday. Significant progress on cold trailing and mop up was made on Thursday, and rehab efforts will start today. No structures are currently threatened. Some crews and engines are being released to return home today or reassigned to other fires.
Hot, dry and windy weather is expected through the weekend. All fire fighting agencies are continuing to urge people to be cautious with all outdoor activities. Fire restrictions remain in effect for all public lands in northeastern Nevada and all open burning is banned in Elko County.
