FIRE FIGHTERS MAKE PROGRESS ON HIGHWAY 93 COMPLEX FIRES
Elko, Nev. – Fire fighters are gaining on the two fires burning in Elko County.
The Highway 93 Complex is located five miles southeast of Jackpot, Nevada and consists of the West Basin Fire and the Eccles Fire is estimated at 72,800 acres. More than 300 people are working on the fires. The West Basin Fire is estimated at 54,500 acres and the Eccles Fire is 18,300 acres. The Type I Incident Management Team (Broyles) is managing the fires. The complex is estimated at 45% contained and is burning in sagebrush, grass, and juniper.
Yesterday’s late afternoon high winds caused both fires to grow. The West Basin Fire grew to the south towards Trout Creek and Gollaher Peak. The Eccles Fire grew to the south and west. Fire activity moderated on both fires after nightfall.
Crews worked to put out a large area of dense juniper on the north flank of the West Basin Fire. Resources patrolled the north, east, and northwest perimeters. There was no action taken on the Eccles fire last night due to no available night resources.
The fire complex is threatening livestock, wildlife forage, mule deer and sage grouse habitat.
Today’s concerns for both the West Basin and Eccles fires are for predicted afternoon isolated dry thunderstorms in the area.
Smoke warnings remain in effect for travelers on U.S. Highway 93. People are advised that there will be increased emergency vehicle/fire fighting traffic on Highway 93 and to be careful.
