FIREFIGHTERS GAIN ON HIGHWAY 93 COMPLEX FIRES
Elko, Nev. – Fire fighters made significant gains corralling the West Basin and Eccles Fires which make up the Highway 93 Complex.
The Highway 93 Complex is located five miles southeast of Jackpot, Nevada and is currently 81,833 acres. The West Basin Fire was last mapped at 62,274 acres and is approximately 60% contained. The Eccles Fire is 19,559 acres and approximately 80%. The complex is estimated at 70% contained and is burning in sagebrush, grass, and juniper. 519 people are working on the fires. The Type I Incident Management Team (Broyles) is managing the fires.
Fire crews and aircraft on the West Basin Fire made significant progress containing the fire on the southeastern flank and north of the Texas Spring Canyon Road. Significant progress was also made on the west flank of the Eccles Fire. In addition, firefighting resources are on alert to response to any new lightning starts from dry thunderstorms in the area.
The fire complex continues to threaten livestock, wildlife forage, mule deer and sage grouse habitat.
Smoke warnings remain in effect for travelers on U.S. Highway 93. People are advised that there will be increased emergency vehicle/fire fighting traffic on Highway 93 and to be careful.

“We’re keeping our fingers crossed as we get through this Red Flag period which will continue rest of today,” said Elko Interagency Center Dispatch Manager Bill Roach. “So far, we’ve been lucky and haven’t had any new starts.”
Fire restrictions in northern and central Nevada will be in effect until further notice. Lands involved include federal, state, tribal, and the Humboldt, Pershing, Lander, Eureka, Elko, Esmeralda, and Nye County Fire Protection Districts and portions of Washoe, Lyon, Churchhill, and White Pine counties.
