West Basin & Elko County Fires, Update #12 or (775) 748-4000, 753-0386

HIGHWAY 93 COMPLEX FIRES CONTINUE

Elko, Nev. – Fire fighters continue working to contain the West Basin and Eccles Fires which make up the Highway 93 Complex - approximately 80,000 acres.

The Highway 93 Complex is located five miles southeast of Jackpot, Nevada. The West Basin Fire was last mapped at 61,329 acres and the Eccles Fire at 18,343 acres. Nearly 400 people are working on the fires. The Type I Incident Management Team (Broyles) is managing the fires. The complex is estimated at 40% contained and is burning in sagebrush, grass, and juniper.

Last night, firefighters on the West Basin Fire worked to keep the fire north of the Texas Springs Road by continuing to secure containment lines built by day operations. There was considerable fire activity in the Texas Springs Road area and in the area northwest of Badger Creek on the east flank of the fire. Additional bull dozers, a single engine air tanker, heavy air tanker, and helicopter were used to hold the fire. No action was taken on the Eccles Fire last night.

The fire complex continues to threaten livestock, wildlife forage, mule deer and sage grouse habitat.

Smoke warnings remain in effect for travelers on U.S. Highway 93. People are advised that there will be increased emergency vehicle/fire fighting traffic on Highway 93 and to be careful.

For more information on the Highway 93 Complex visit the Fire Website at http://www.inciweb.org/ or call Fire Information at the Incident Command Post - 1-800-958-1379.

“We have a Red Flag Warning in effect today from noon to 11 pm and thunderstorms are forecasted,” said Elko Interagency Center Dispatch Manager Bill Roach. “Fire crews are ready to respond.”

Fire restrictions in northern and central Nevada will be in effect until further notice.
