West Basin & Elko County Fires, Update #15 or (775) 748-4000, 753-0386
FIREFIGHTERS GET THE UPPER HAND ON AREA FIRES
Elko, Nev. – The Eccles Fire is contained and the West Basin Fire is approaching containment. The two fires make up the Highway 93 Complex.
The Highway 93 Complex is located five miles southeast of Jackpot, Nevada and has been re-mapped at 80,533 acres. The West Basin Fire is 60,974 acres and is approximately 82% contained. The Eccles Fire is 19,559 acres and is 100% contained. The complex is estimated at 90% contained and is burning in sagebrush, grass, and juniper. 535 people worked the fires today. The Type I Incident Management Team (Broyles) is managing the fires.
Fire activity was minimal today on both fires. Firefighters worked hard today to complete line construction on the east flank of the West Basin Fire. Hotshot crew hand lines started last night were completed. Rehabilitation work was in full swing on numerous dozer lines, and engine crews patrolled for smokes and hot spots around the perimeter of the entire fire.
On the Eccles Fire, fire lines were completed on the west side of the fire. Crews and engines are patrolling previously constructed fire line for smokes and hot spots. The fire is no longer a threat to livestock, grazing, and other resource values. Risk of spread is very low.
“The fire fighters have turned the corner on these fires and are putting them to bed,” said Elko Interagency Center Dispatch Manager Bill Roach. “Fire fighters and other resources began demobilizing today and were sent to other fires or home to rest.”
People are advised that there will be increased emergency vehicle/fire fighting traffic on Highway 93 and to be careful.
