BLM To Prepare Newmont South Operation Area
BLM is preparing the SEIS in response to a decision by the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit in August 2006, which found BLM's analysis of some of the cumulative effects of the SOAPA Project insufficient. The SEIS will analyze potential impacts to air quality, minerals, Native American/cultural issues, vegetation, grazing, recreation wilderness, threatened and endangered species, noise, visual, and socioeconomics. The BLM will also be updating dewatering and dewatering related issues. The Ninth Circuit otherwise upheld BLM's environmental analysis, rejecting all of the other arguments made by Great Basin Mine Watch and the Mineral Policy Center, who filed the legal challenge in 2002.
Public comments and issues to be analyzed in the SEIS will be accepted during a 21-day comment period ending March 30, 2007. Comments may be mailed to BLM at 3900 East Idaho Street, Elko, NV 89801, or faxed to (775) 861-6656.
For questions or information about the SOAPA Project or the SEIS, contact Deb McFarlane at (775) 753-0200, or 3900 East Idaho Street., Elko, NV, 89801.
