BLM ANNOUNCES RESOURCE ADVISORY COUNCIL MEETING
The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Northeastern Great Basin Resource Advisory Council (RAC) will meet on July 26 and 27, 2007, at the Eureka Opera House Office, 31 South Main, Eureka, Nev. The meeting will begin at 1:00 p.m. on July 26 and 8:00 a.m. on July 27.
The first day will be a tour of the Ruby Hill Mine near Eureka. The tour will depart the Opera House at 1:00 p.m. and should return by 5:00 p.m. Visitors are welcome to participate in the field tour but need to provide their own transportation.
Topics to be discussed at the Friday business meeting include a discussion of the previous day’s tour; Nevada Wilderness update; Wild Horse and Burro Program update; Ely Fuel Treatments; Off-Highway Vehicle Program update; Grazing Permit Renewal update; Mining update; and Field Managers/District Rangers reports. A public comment period will begin at 10:00 a.m.
The Federal Land Policy and Management Act directs the Secretary of the Interior to involve the public in planning and discussion of issues related to management of BLM administered public lands. The three Resource Advisory Councils in Nevada help BLM with this community participation directive. The Councils’ membership represents interests in mining, environmental, wild horse and burro, Native American, livestock, state agencies, and elected officials.
The RAC provides advice and recommendations to the BLM on land use planning and management of the public lands. Meetings are open to the public and public comment periods are included in each meeting. This forum provides an excellent opportunity for people to ask questions of the citizen-based advisory council or to make comments that may assist RACs in their planning efforts.
For more information about the RAC meeting, contact Mike Brown at the BLM Elko Field Office, (775) 753-0386.
