WILDFIRE GROWING RAPIDLY SOUTHWEST OF CARLIN, NEVADA
Elko, Nevada – A rapidly growing, wind-driven wildfire has burned approximately 3,000 acres about 5 miles southwest of Carlin, Nevada and is headed toward I-80.
The lightning-caused Barth Fire started Friday afternoon (July 6) and is burning in sagebrush and grass. Two structures and several outbuildings have burned. There are no reports of injuries.
Several fire-fighting crews, fire engines, and bull dozers are on the scene now.
“We’re asking people to stay out of the area and to delay any travel west of Carlin on I-80 for the next few hours,” said Nevada Division of Forestry Fire Management Officer Sam Hicks “We’re working with the Nevada Highway Patrol and Nevada Department of Transportation. At this point, closing I-80 could be necessary because of the smoke, ash, and hazard.”
The West Basin Fire is currently burning about 10 miles east of Jackpot, Nevada. Five other fires are burning northeast of Wells. All the fires resulted from lightning in a storm cell moving through the area.
