SAND AND GRAVEL AVAILABLE
Several sand and gravel collection sites on BLM-administered public lands in Elko County are open for public use.
“People do need permits to get the sand and gravel, but they are very reasonably priced,” said BLM Elko Field Office Geologist Kirk Laird. “Sand and gravel permits range from $0.50 to $0.75 per yard and are available at the Elko Field Office. We have sites/pits in Ryndon, Carlin (Marys Wash), North Wells, and West Wendover. Permits can also be obtained through the mail.”
“We also consider requests to open additional sand/gravel collection areas if there is enough public interest and a lack of gravel resources (public or private) available nearby. BLM tries not to establish gravel sites that would compete with local businesses. People are responsible for their own loading and transporting if they use a public sand/gravel site,” Laird added.
“We have had a few instances of people helping themselves to sand and gravel without purchasing a permit. The permit system has been streamlined and is easy to do. We also have collection sites for landscape rocks. The rock permits cost up to $7.00 per ton.” Laird concluded.
For more information about sand, gravel, and/or landscape rocks permits and sites call the BLM Elko Field Office at 775-753-0386 or go the office at 3900 East Idaho Street, Elko, Nevada.
