MULTIPLE FIRE STARTS NEAR ELKO, NEVADA

Elko, Nevada – A fast moving dry lightning storm sparked nine wildfires north, east, and south of Elko, NV Sunday afternoon.
Three fires along Susie Creek about 10 miles north of Carlin have burned approximately 400 acres in sagebrush and grass.
Three fires near Elburz about 10 miles northeast of Elko burned over 100 acres and caused one evacuation.
Other fires in the Spring Creek area were contained quickly. All fires are burning in sagebrush and grass.
A large array of fire fighting resources are currently on hand or enroute to the scene. Twenty fire engines from the Carlin Volunteer Fire Department (VFD) , Lee Engine Company, Ryndon VFD, Deeth VFD, Wells VFD, Spring Creek VFD, Nevada Division of Forestry, Bureau of Land Management; and Nevada Division of Forestry crews from Wells and Carlin, are fighting the fires now. Smoke jumpers based in Ely jumped on the Susie Creek fires and a second crew of smoke jumpers is enroute from Cedar City, Utah. Air tankers have been ordered and bull dozers and water tenders are being used.
Acting Elko Fire Management Officer Dylan Rader commented, “With the winds and the dry fuel conditions … all the agencies and volunteer fire fighters responded quickly for the initial attack on multiple incidents. What the weather brings will affect our containment efforts. We urge the public to be extremely cautious with fire and outdoor activities.”
