RANGE WORKING GROUP MEETING SCHEDULED

The South Buckhorn Allotment Working Group will meet at the BLM Elko Field Office,
3900 East Idaho Street, Elko, Nevada, on Wednesday, March 17, 2004. The meeting will begin at
2:00 p.m. The purpose of this meeting is to develop management actions for the west side of the
South Buckhorn allotment in the Crescent Valley area. The public is invited to attend.
The South Buckhorn allotment (southwest of Carlin and south of I-80) encompasses
315,000 acres of intermingled public and private lands, of which 219,000 acres are publicly
owned.
Thirty people representing a wide diversity of organizations and interests toured the South
Buckhorn allotment in October 2003. Group discussions on the tour covered a range of concerns
that impact range conditions such as horses, livestock use, effects of wildfire, drought, riparian
conditions, grasshoppers and Mormon crickets, soils, mining, water quality, fencing, and more.
One result of the tour was that people wanted to work together in a collaborative effort to go
forward with the goal of meeting Rangeland Health Standards and Guidelines that were adopted for
public lands in Nevada. The South Buckhorn Allotment Working Group was then formed to begin
working towards the goal. The working group has met several times since forming.
