Gather Reports

Date/2010 Comments

Tuesday,
November 30

After spending the weekend at the Palomino Valley Center, the 22 mares and 21 of their young returned to the Pine Nut HMA. About 20 observers watched as the weanlings and mares were unloaded into a corral, given some time to settle down, and then walked out after the gate was opened.

One 4-5 month old foal didn't pair up, so it stayed at the Palomino Valley Center, where it is eating hay.  It is available for adoption.

Thursday,
November 25

Summary: a helicopter recon late on November 24 of areas outside the HMA did not find enough horses to warrant further gather operations.  Gather operations for the Pine Nut HMA (and areas outside the HMA) have concluded.

Mares gathered on 11/24 were vaccinated with PZP-22 at the temporary holding corrals off US 95 Alternate this morning.

22 wet mares and 22 weanlings/foals were taken to Palomino Valley Center to be given time to match up, with matched pairs to be returned to the HMA next week.

68 horses (46 studs and 22 dry mares) were released back into the HMA by early afternoon, witnessed by local media and public observers.

Summary: clear, calm weather conditions allowed approximately 105 horses to be gathered on the north end of the HMA off Como Road (south of Dayton, Nev.) without incident.  Nine public observers (including local media) monitored operations from the gather site.  All horses were transported to the temporary corrals off US 95 Alternate where selected mares are scheduled to be vaccinated with PZP-22 on Thursday morning.  All horses will then be returned to the HMA.

There were 15 horses gathered in the Buckskin Mountains area this morning (7 studs, 7 mares and 1 foal).  They were moved to the temporary sorting corrals off U.S. 95 Alternate (south of Lahontan State Recreation Area).  They will be transported to the Palomino Valley Center (along with the horses collected on Nov 20) tomorrow (Nov 22).

Saturday,
November 20

Summary: winds subsided for a while this morning so the contractor was able to fly for several hours in the Buckskin Mountains area before shutting down for the day at approximately 10:30 a.m.  A public observation safety zone was available adjacent to the trap site during operations though no observers came out to the site.

There were 22 horses gathered in the Buckskin Mountains area this morning (8 studs, 10 mares and 4 foals).  They were moved to the temporary sorting corrals off U.S. 95 Alternate (south of Lahontan State Recreation Area).  One of the studs escaped during the unloading process.  The 21 others will be held at the corrals for transport to Palomino Valley Center (closed on Saturday).

Eight visitor observers (deer hunters who were in the area) stopped by the gather site and watched gather operations for a while from the designated safety observation area.  Three wild horse advocates came to the temporary corrals during the afternoon to view the horses collected today at the Buckskin Mountains trap site.

Animals gathered: 22 (one stud escaped from temporary corrals leaving 21 at the corrals)

Friday,
November 19

Summary: contractor attempted to start gather operations in the Buckskin Mountains (east of the Pine Nut Mountain Range) this morning but high winds from an approaching winter storm shut down helicopter operations at 7:30 a.m.

Eleven media and public observers toured the gather site (non-safety issue since no helicopter or horses were present at the time) and interviewed BLM employees for about two hours.  A decision was made to not offer a guided-observation tour to the gather site on Saturday morning due to the approaching winter storm, though a public observation safety zone was set up in case someone arrived at the site on their own.
