Pilot-Table Mountain Herd Management Area (HMA)
The Pilot/Table Mountain Herd Management Area (HMA) is located approximately twenty miles southeast of Hawthorne, Nevada. The topography of the HMA ranges from flat valleys through mountainous terrain from 1,525m to 3,040m in elevation. The HMA contains approximately 255,040 acres of public and private land within the BLM-Carson City District, Stillwater Field Office.
Three livestock grazing allotments, Pilot/Table Mountain, Cedar Mountain and Gillis Mountain, spread across the HMA. Approximately 91% of the HMA occurs in the Pilot/Table Mountain Allotment, 5% in the Cedar Mountain Allotment with the remaining 4% in the Gillis Mountain allotment. The wild horses primarily use the Pilot/Table Mountain Allotment portion of the HMA.
The Appropriate Management Level (AML) for the HMA has been established at 228-346 wild horses. The last BLM gather of excess wild horses above the AML was in 2006.
