Goal of Gather:
The BLM will gather approximately 500 wild horses and permanently remove about 250 animals. About 250 will be released back to the range after fertility control measures are taken. Of the 250 released back, all mares, an estimated 100, will be receive the fertility control vaccine Porcine Zona Pellucida (PZP-22) and those released back will be adjusted toward a 60 percent male/40 percent female sex ratio.
The gather is being administered by the Stillwater Field Office, Carson City District. It started on Nov. 3 and is expected to take about 12 days.
Recent inventories estimate the population of wild horses within or adjacent to the Wassuk Herd Management Area (HMA) at 623. Wild horse numbers fluctuate based on the animals' movement outside of HMAs in search of forage, water and space. The Appropriate Management Level (AML) for the Wassk HMA is 110-165 wild horses.
Details of the Gather:
The purpose of the gather is to capture approximately 500 wild horses and remove approximately 250 excess wild horses from the Wassuk HMA. Removal of these animals will reduce the current herd population closer to the established appropriate management level (AML) of 110-165 wild horses. The estimated number of wild horses remaining within the HMA followin the gather will be at least 373 animals.
