Working Conditions for Hotshots

All firefighters are required to perform arduous firefighting duty. This involves field work calling for above average endurance and superior conditioning.

Hotshots are superior firefighters. As a Hotshot you must be prepared to work in steep terrain, and in extreme temperatures, altitude and smoke, while maintaining reserve work capacity to meet unforeseen emergencies. You must be prepared to work hour after hour, day after day.

BLM firefighters are available to be dispatched to fire assignments anywhere in the country, and sometimes out of the country. Firefighters must be able to be away from their duty station a minimum of three weeks. In fire camp firefighters work and usually live outdoors. There will be days when they get little rest. Showers and hot meals may not be available, often the food is military-style rations. Most wildfires are well away from cities and towns.

Firefighters are expected to live out of their fire packs for three weeks at a time.
