Summary: Efforts to release wild horses back to the New Pass/Ravenswood continued today and the administration of fertility control was initiated. Release efforts to date have been successful.

Animals released back onto the HMA: A total of 140 studs were released. 100 mares gathered from the New Pass/Ravenswood HMA and treated with the fertility drug were released. There are 37 mares left to treat and release and this will be done tomorrow.

Cause: Unknown; vet report pending, preliminary report is colic.

Cause: A colt that was blind and missing one eye was euthinized. The veterinary euthanasia report is pending and will be provided once received.
The Nevada State Brand Inspector collected 6 branded animals and a local rancher took 1 branded animal

Wednesday, January 19Summary: No wild horses were gathered today and gather operations were concluded for the New Pass/Ravenswood HMA. The operations will transition to release of studs back to the HMA and preparation for fertility control, currently scheduled to begin the morning of 1/20/11.

Summary: Gather operations continued at the New Pass/Ravenswood HMA. The temperature was in the mid 40s with overcast skies; patches of snow were on the ground and the roads were muddy. Approximately 11 wild horses were gathered and are being sorted by age and sex at the holding corrals. Gather operations are still in progress; any updated information will be provided in tomorrow’s report.

Gathered wild horses are healthy and primarily have an average Henneke body condition score (BCS) of 5.0. A few mares have a 4.0 BCS and some studs are in excess of a 5.0 BCS. There are no health concerns with animals gathered from the New Pass/Ravenswood HMA.

Gather operations may continue at the same trap site tomorrow, and move locations at the end of the day.

Summary: Gather operations continued on the New Pass/Ravenswood HMA. Temperatures increased into the low 50’s during the day with partly cloudy skies. The warmer temperatures led to melted snow and muddy roads. The trap was dismantled late Monday afternoon and will be set-up Tuesday morning to continue gathering wild horses on the southern end of the HMA.

Gathered wild horses are healthy and primarily have an average Henneke body condition score (BCS) of 5.0. A few mares have a 4.0 BCS and some studs are in excess of a 5.0 BCS. There are no health concerns with animals gathered from the New Pass/Ravenswood HMA.

No members of the public were at the wild horse gather today; a BLM volunteer attended the gather to photograph gather operations.

Cause: One 8-year-old mare was found dead in the holding corrals Monday morning. The APHIS vet performed a necropsy to evaluate the potential cause of death; the veterinary report is pending and will be provided when received. Preliminary information includes mild colic with pleuritis and displacement of the internal bowels.

January 15 and 16

Summary: Gather operations continued over the weekend at a new trap site on the New Pass/Ravenswood HMA. Temperatures increased into the low 50’s during the day with partly cloudy skies. The warmer temperatures led to melted snow and muddy roads.

Gathered wild horses are healthy and primarily have an average Henneke body condition score (BCS) of 5.0. A few mares have a 4.0 BCS and some studs are in excess of a 5.0 BCS. There are no health concerns with animals gathered from the New Pass/Ravenswood HMA.

No members of the public attended the wild horse gather over the weekend.

No fertility control applications or releases took place over the weekend. These events are scheduled to begin in the middle of next week.

Animals gathered: Seventy wild horses were gathered over the weekend; 14 wild horses (5 mares, 8 studs, 1 foal) were gathered on Saturday and 56 wild horses (34 mares, 15 studs, 7 foals) were gathered on Sunday.

Summary: Gather operations continued at the New Pass/Ravenswood HMA. The weather consisted of cool temperatures, overcast skies, and slight rainfall.

Thirty-five wild horses were gathered today. Gathered wild horses are healthy and primarily have an average Henneke body condition score (BCS) of 5.0. A few mares have a 4.0 BCS and some studs are in excess of a 5.0 BCS.

There are no health concerns with animals gathered from the New Pass/Ravenswood HMA.

Gather operations continued Thursday (01/13) after the daily report submission; 44 wild horses (25 mares, 8 studs, 11 foals) were gathered from the New Pass/Ravenswood HMA on 01/13.

Summary: The New Pass/Ravenswood HMA portion of the Callaghan Complex and New Pass/Ravenswood Wild Horse Gather continued today. The temperature was 21 ºF with low cloud cover in the morning and warmed up to 35 ºF with clear and sunny skies by the afternoon.

Gathered wild horses are healthy and primarily have an average Henneke body condition score (BCS) of 5.0. A few mares have a 4.0 BCS and some studs are in excess of a 5.0 BCS. There are no health concerns with animals gathered from the New Pass/Ravenswood HMA.

Gather operations continued yesterday (01/10) after the summary report was submitted. The total number of wild horses gathered from the New Pass/Ravenswood HMA on 01/10 was 62 wild horses (29 mares, 23 studs, 10 foals).

The veterinary euthanasia reports for 01/08 and 01/10 remain pending and will be provided once received.

Summary: The New Pass/Ravenswood HMA portion of the Callaghan Complex and New Pass/Ravenswood Wild Horse Gather continued today. Approximately 50 wild horses have been gathered from the New Pass/Ravenswood HMA and are being sorted by age and sex at the holding corrals. Gather operations are still in progress; any updated information will be provided in tomorrow’s report.

Gathered wild horses are healthy and primarily have an average Henneke body condition score (BCS) of 5.0. A few mares have a 4.0 BCS and some studs are in excess of a 5.0 BCS. There are no health concerns with animals gathered from the New Pass/Ravenswood HMA.

The temperature was 4ºF this morning and warmed up to 40ºF by this afternoon. The skies were clear and sunny and snow patches are on the ground.

Animals shipped: 38 wild horses (12 mares, 8 studs, 18 foals) from the Callaghan HMA were shipped to the Indian Lakes Road facility in Fallon, NV.

Cause: One 3-year-old mare from the Callaghan HMA was euthanized due to a stifle injury sustained from a slip or fall in the holding corrals. The veterinary euthanasia report is pending and will be provided once received.

Cause: One 5-year-old mare from the Callaghan HMA was euthanized due to a hind leg injury and one 20+ year-old mare was euthanized due to physicals defects of both hind pasterns. The veterinary euthanasia reports are pending and will be provided once they are received.

Callaghan/New Pass/Ravenswood 01/10/11

January 8 and 9

Summary: The Callaghan HMA portion of the Callaghan Complex and New Pass/Ravenswood HMA Wild Horse Gather concluded Saturday. Twenty seven mares received fertility control and were released back to the Callaghan HMA Saturday morning; 42 studs were also released back to the Callaghan HMA. Twenty nine wild horses from the Callaghan HMA were shipped to the Indian Lakes Road facility in Fallon, NV.

Gather operations transitioned to the New Pass/Ravenswood HMA Saturday afternoon and 40 wild horses were gathered. Gather operations continued at the New Pass Ravenswood HMA on Sunday; 106 wild horses were gathered.

Gathered wild horses are healthy and primarily have a Henneke body condition score (BCS) of 4.5 to 5.0. A few mares have a 4.0 BCS and some studs are in excess of a 5.0 BCS. There are no health concerns with animals gathered from the New Pass/Ravenswood HMA.

Weekend temperatures were cold; averaging 8-16ºF in the mornings and 30-45ºF in the afternoons. Weather conditions consisted of mostly clear skies with some light snowfall. 
 
Animals gathered: 40 wild horses (23 mares, 12 studs, 5 foals) were gathered from the New Pass/Ravenswood HMA on Saturday (01/08) and 106 wild horses (45 mares, 44 studs, 17 foals) were gathered from the New Pass/Ravenswood HMA on Sunday (01/09).
Animals shipped: 29 wild horses (3 mares, 19 studs, 7 foals) from the Callaghan HMA were shipped to the Indian Lakes Road facility in Fallon, NV.
Animals released back onto the HMA: 69 (27 mares, 42 studs) were released back to the Callaghan HMA.

Cause: A 20+ year-old mare from the New Pass/Ravenswood HMA was euthanized on Saturday due to a trampling accident that occurred in the holding corrals. The veterinary euthanasia report is pending and will be provided once received.

Summary: The wild horse trap was not relocated today; it remained in the southwestern portion of the Callaghan HMA.
 
Morning temperatures were cold but warmed up to 40 °F by the afternoon, skies were clear and sunny.

Gathered wild horses primarily have a Henneke body condition score of 4.5 to 5+, with few exceptions of body condition scores between 3 and 3.5.

Fertility control was not given today and is scheduled to begin tomorrow morning.

Gather operations are still in progress this afternoon. Any amended information for 01/07/2011 will be provided in the next report. The Callaghan HMA portion of the Callaghan Complex Wild Horse Gather will conclude over the weekend and transition to the New Pass/Ravenswood HMA.

The wild horse trap was moved to a new location on the Callaghan HMA this morning. Temperatures remained cold, but skies were clear and sunny.

Gathered wild horses primarily have a Henneke body condition score of 4.5 to 5+, with few exceptions of body condition scores between 3 and 3.5.

The wild horse trap may be relocated (from the new location established this morning) to another location in the Callaghan HMA tomorrow. Also, gathered mares from the Callaghan HMA may receive fertility control tomorrow.

A total of 58 wild horses (24 mares, 23 studs, 11 foals) were gathered on 01/03/11 (updated from 44, noted in yesterday’s report). Thirty four of the 58 animals were gathered outside of the Callaghan HMA and will be shipped to holding facilities.

Tomorrow, wild horses may be shipped to the holding facility in Fallon, NV.

Wednesday, December 22

Summary: The first part of the Callaghan Complex and New Pass/Ravenswood HMA gather is complete. Activities will resume on or about January 3, with the western half of Callaghan HMA, and then on to New Pass/Ravenswood HMA.

Yesterday afternoon we reported a total of 17 wild horses gathered from the Callaghan HMA. The actual number of animals gathered on 12/21 was 19 wild horses.

Twenty eight studs from the Callaghan HMA were released back to the HMA yesterday afternoon.

Animals shipped: Twenty four (3 Callaghan HMA mares, 2 Rocky Hills HMA studs, 3 Callaghan HMA studs, 7 Bald Mountain HMA foals, and 9 Callaghan HMA foals) wild horses were shipped to the Indian Lakes Road facility in Fallon, NV.

Tuesday, December 21

Summary: The Callaghan Complex Wild Horse Gather continued today at the Callaghan HMA. The temperature was in the low 40’s for most of the day, skies were partly cloudy, and the ground was lightly covered in snow.

Gathered wild horses had an average Henneke body condition score between 4 and 4.5 and no health issues or concerns were reported.

Fertility control treatments are being given to mares gathered from the Callaghan HMA. Gather operations will continue tomorrow at the Callaghan HMA and the Callaghan HMA wild horses may be released tomorrow morning. After operations are completed tomorrow, the Callaghan Complex Wild Horse Gather may shut down for the holiday season.

The Bald Mountain HMA mare with a pre-existing wound to one of her fetlocks (mentioned in the 12/18-12/19 daily report) was shipped to the Indian Lakes Road facility today to heal. She may be returned back to the Bald Mountain HMA when fully healed.

The Callaghan HMA mare reported with a knee injury in yesterday’s (12/20) report was euthanized on 12/20 due to a severe laceration and puncture wound to the left front leg. For additional information, please refer to the veterinary report posted on the daily report for 12/20

Monday, December 20

Summary: The helicopter was grounded early this morning due to low cloud cover. The helicopter was in the air by 8:30am after the clouds lifted. There was light snowfall this morning, temperatures remained cold, and the ground was muddy.

The gathered wild horses had an average body condition between 4 and 4.5. One gathered mare was reported with a knee injury and more details will be provided when they are received.

One member of the public arrived at the holding corral location to view the gather.
Gather operations will continue tomorrow with the Callaghan HMA and wild horses may be shipped to the Indian Lakes Road facility in Fallon, NV. Also, fertility control may be given to the Callaghan HMA gathered mares tomorrow.

Summary: Gather operations for the Callaghan HMA continued December 18-19. On Saturday (12/18) the helicopter remained grounded for the majority of the day due to heavy winds and no wild horses were gathered. One hundred and fourteen (54 mares, 60 studs) wild horses (previously gathered from the Bald Mountain HMA) were released back to the Bald Mountain HMA on 12/18. All of the released mares (54) were treated with fertility control.

During the release efforts on Saturday, a 5 year old Bald Mountain HMA mare with a pre-existing wound to one of her front fetlocks was sorted from the release group. She was treated with penicillin and pain medicine and placed in the holding corrals for further observation. She will be released back to the Bald Mountain HMA once healed.

Three Bald Mountain HMA studs were sorted from the release group (due to physical conditions) and euthanized Saturday (see veterinary reports below). Two additional Bald Mountain HMA mares were sorted from the release group (due to physical conditions) and euthanized on Sunday (see veterinary reports below).

On Sunday (12/19), 22 wild horses (8 mares, 10 studs, and 4 foals) were gathered from the Callaghan HMA. The gathered wild horses had an average Henneke Body Condition Score of 4.5, with body scores ranging from 3 to 6+. The wild horse trap was taken down and moved towards the central portion of the Callaghan HMA.

There are approximately 53 wild horses from the Bald Mountain HMA and Rocky Hills HMA in the holding corrals awaiting shipment to the Indian Lakes Road Facility.

The veterinary report for the euthanized foal on December 15th is now available under the daily report for the 15th.

The weather was cold and windy. Gather operations shut down late this afternoon due to heavy snowfall. Gather operations will continue tomorrow at the Callaghan HMA if the weather conditions improve. Also, wild horses gathered from the Bald Mountain HMA may be released back to the Bald Mountain HMA tomorrow.

One member of the public attended the Wild Horse Gather Public Day. Daily reports will continue on Monday (12/20) and will include a weekend update.

The weather was cold, and the skies were overcast. Snow and ice was on the ground. 

Gathered mares from the Bald Mountain HMA are receiving fertility control treatments this afternoon and gather operations will continue at the Bald Mountain HMA tomorrow.

Summary: The Bald Mountain HMA portion of the Callaghan Complex Wild Horse Gather continued today. The gathered wild horses primarily had a Henneke body condition score of 4, with few exceptions of body condition scores between 2 and 3. 

Two members of the public briefly observed the Bald Mountain HMA wild horse gather. 

Gather operations will continue tomorrow at the Bald Mountain HMA. Gathered mares will tentatively receive fertility control treatments tomorrow. 

Animals gathered: 29 (14 mares, 11 studs, and 4 foals) wild horses were gathered.
Animals shipped: 40 (14 mares, 8 studs, and 18 foals) were shipped to the holding facility in Fallon, NV.
Animals released back onto the HMA: 0 wild horses were released.
Gather related animal deaths: 1 wild horse was euthanized.
Cause: The APHIS vet concluded that the wild horse had an acute fracture of the left leg due to being kicked by another wild horse in the holding corrals.
Non-gather related animal deaths: 1 wild horse was euthanized.
Cause: The APHIS vet concluded that the euthanized wild horse had a non-gather related serious physical defect.

Bald Mountain HMA Vet Report 12-14-10

Monday, December 13Summary: This weekend (12/11-12/12), fertility control was applied to 26 mares gathered from the Rocky Hills HMA. All 26 of the mares were released back to the Rocky Hills HMA without incident.

On Saturday morning an unexpected foal was born to a mare selected for release. Fertility control was not given to the mare and she was placed in a separate pen with her foal. On Sunday, a BLM staff member took the mare and her foal to the Fallon, NV facility.

The Bald Mountain HMA portion of the Callaghan Complex Gather has started and no incidents or concerns have been reported.

A BLM family observed the Bald Mountain HMA wild horse gather on Saturday. Since then, no other visitors have attended the wild horse gather.

Throughout the weekend, temperatures were in the 40’s and 50’s. Saturday was overcast with slight rain sprinkles and Sunday was warm, sunny and clear. Today, the weather has been in the mid 30’s with overcast skies.

Animals gathered: 70 wild horses (27 mares, 34 studs, and 9 foals) were gathered from the Bald Mountain HMA December 11-12. Today (December 13), 58 wild horses were gathered from the Bald Mountain HMA. Wild horses gathered today will be sorted by sex and age class this afternoon.
Animals shipped: 2 (1 mare and 1 newborn) wild horses were shipped on December 12th. No wild horses have been shipped today.
Animals released back onto the HMA: 26 mares (with fertility control) were released back to Rocky Hills HMA on December 11th and no wild horses have been released today.

Friday, December 10

Summary: The Rocky Hills HMA portion of the Callaghan Complex Wild Horse Gather concluded today. A total of 106 wild horses were gathered from the Rocky Hills HMA since December 7, 2010.

Today, 40 wild horses were shipped to the Palomino Valley Center in Fallon, NV and 27 stud horses were released back onto the Rocky Hills HMA. The Bald Mountain HMA portion of the Callaghan Complex Gather and fertility control of gathered mares from the Rocky Hills HMA is scheduled to begin tomorrow.  Two members of the French media attended the media/public viewing day today.

Cause: Four wild horses were euthanized due to non-gather related causes. A formal report is pending from the Animal Plant and Health Inspection Service (APHIS) veterinarian. Preliminary information includes one 2 year old filly, one 4 year old mare, one 25 year old stud, and one 30 year old stud euthanized due to pre-existing conditions.

Thursday, December 9Summary: The Callaghan Complex Wild Horse Gather continued today in the Rocky Hills HMA. The skies were overcast and some light rain occurred. All gathered wild horses were healthy and no concerns were reported. The majority of the body conditions of the gathered wild horses were moderately thin. Gather operations for the Rocky Hills HMA were without incident. 

Gather operations may move to the Bald Mountain HMA tomorrow.
