Public Land Order Issued to Extend the Withdrawal at Forest Service Austin Administrative Site

Tonopah — The Assistant Secretary of the Interior Wilma A. Lewis has approved Public Land Order (PLO) 7738 to extend the withdrawal of a30-acre parcel for the U.S. Forest Service Austin administrative site within Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest lands.

The PLO withdraws the lands from location under Federal mining laws, but not from mineral leasing laws. The Order was published in the Federal Register on Jan. 5, 2010.

The lands were formerly withdrawn for a 20-year period for the development of the facilities. The withdrawal extension is necessary to protect the Federal investment in the facilities located on the parcel.

The site contains the Austin Ranger District offices, housing for permanent and temporary employees, trailer sites with utilities, visitor and employee vehicle parking areas, warehouse and horse corrals.

The BLM manages more land - over 245 million acres - than any other Federal agency. This land, known as the National System of Public Lands, is primarily located in 12 Western states, including Alaska. The Bureau, with a budget of about $1 billion, also administers 700 million acres of sub-surface mineral estate throughout the nation. The BLM's multiple-use mission is to sustain the health and productivity of the public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations. The Bureau accomplishes this by managing such activities as outdoor recreation, livestock grazing, mineral development, and energy production, and by conserving natural, historical, cultural, and other resources on public lands.
