BLM to Hold Public Meeting on Sulphur Springs Fuels Reduction Project

Battle Mountain, Nev. — The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Battle Mountain District will conduct a public meeting to discuss the proposed Sulphur Springs Hazardous Fuel Reduction Project on Thursday, June 18 at 7 p.m. in the Eureka Opera House located at 31 S. Main St., Eureka, Nev.

The purpose of the meeting will be to receive information and public comments on options presented in an environmental assessment (EA) as well as options presented by members of the public.

The proposed project will reduce hazardous fuels on about 8,620 acres of public lands. Sulphur Springs is located about 31 miles northwest of Eureka in the Garden Pass area.

The District has prepared and issued a preliminary EA to analyze the impacts associated with implementing hazardous fuels reduction activities in the proposed areas. The goal of the fuel reduction project is to create a fire defense system within the assessment area to make an established or emerging wildfire easier and safer to manage.

The EA is available online at: http://www.blm.gov/nv/st/en/fo/battle_mountain_field/blm_information/national_environmental.html.

Written comments should be sent to: BLM, Battle Mountain District, Attention: Sulphur Springs Hazardous Fuel Reduction Project Lead, 50 Bastian Road, Battle Mountain, NV 89820. Comments must be received at the Battle Mountain District, by close of business, June 26, 2009. Comments may also be submitted by facsimile, 775-635-4034.

Comments will be made available to the public, and will include personal identifying information such as address.

For further information concerning the Project, call Chad Lewis at 775-635-4000.

The BLM manages more land - 253 million acres - than any other Federal agency. This land, known as the National System of Public Lands, is primarily located in 12 Western states, including Alaska. The Bureau, with a budget of about $1 billion, also administers 700 million acres of sub-surface mineral estate throughout the nation. The BLM's multiple-use mission is to sustain the health and productivity of the public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations. The Bureau accomplishes this by managing such activities as outdoor recreation, livestock grazing, mineral development, and energy production, and by conserving natural, historical, cultural, and other resources on public lands.
