BLM TO CONDUCT PRESCRIBED BURN - LOCKES POND

The Bureau of Land Management’s (BLM) Battle Mountain Field Office is planning to conduct a prescribed burn during the week of April 11th, 2005, in the Lockes Pond and Big Well Units of the Railroad Valley Wildlife Management Area. The prescribed fire area is located off of US Hwy 6 about half-way between Ely and Tonopah. Objectives of the burn are to improve wildlife habitat around the ponds by removing dead and decadent vegetation and enhancing nesting cover and habitat. The prescribed burn is highly dependant on prescribed weather and fuel parameters, therefore, the burn may take place any day that a window of acceptable prescriptive conditions opens. The burn is expected to take no more than two days. Smoke may be visible for up to four hours at a time from US HWY 6 and other nearby areas. Approximately 100 acres are targeted for implementation.

For further information please contact Dave Davis, Fire Management Officer at the Battle Mountain Field Office, phone (775) 635-4000.
