FIBER OPTIC TELEPHONE LINE PROPOSED

The Bureau of Land Management’s (BLM) Battle Mountain Field Office has recently completed an Environmental Assessment (EA) which explores potential impacts of SBC’s proposed Austin to Yomba fiber optic telephone line. SBC (formerly Nevada Bell) has requested a right-of-way for a buried fiber optic line which would run from Austin to the Yomba Reservation, with a branch to the town of Ione. The line would provide upgraded telephone service to southern Reese River Valley and to Ione

The EA was written to assess possible effects that construction and maintenance of the project might have on environmental resources. The EA is available for public review at the BLM’s Battle Mountain Field Office, 50 Bastian Road, and at the Forest Service office in Austin, 100 Midas Canyon Road. The public is invited to submit comments on the proposal through close of business, Friday, May 14, 2004.

For further information, please contact Chuck Lane, Realty Specialist, or Mary Craggett, Environmental Coordinator, at the Battle Mountain Field Office at (775) 635-4000.
