National Historic Trails Viewshed Analysis (Visual Resource Management)
Viewshed Analysis and Cultural Inventory Planned for Nevada Historic Trails

Project: Prepare a viewshed analysis and conduct additional cultural inventory work on the Old Spanish Trail in Southern Nevada. This includes collection of baseline inventory data, historic context research and development and landscape analysis, including visual simulations.

ARRA Funding Level: $938,000

Progress:

February 2, 2011: $931,704 obligated, $29,369 spent.

November 2010: Archaeological surveys and identification and verification of high potential route segments are scheduled to begin.

January 2011: Fieldwork on Inventory Observation Points (IOPs) and visual assessments from those established IOPs will be conducted.

May 2011:  Of the 9 tasks to be completed under the Statement of Work, BLM has accepted the Task 1 Records Review Report and the Task 7 Identify the IOPs.  The BLM is reviewing draft submissions of the Task 2 GIS database, Task 3 Field Inventory Summary and Task 5 Locate/Verify High Potential Trail Segments.

Contracts: The contractor selected for the project is Architecture, Engineering, Consulting, Operations and Management (AECOM), an engineering and architectural design firm based in Los Angeles.

Completion target date: All BLM Nevada tasks are anticipated to be completed by the end of June 2011.  The entire project is expected to be completed by January 30, 2012

Jobs: The project will employ 4 contract workers for approximately 3 months.

Local purchases: Contract workers will purchase lodging, food, fuel and other operational supplies in the Las Vegas area.

Benefits and Needs: The project will provide critical scientific data for numerous proposed actions, including multiple renewable energy projects near the Old Spanish Trail. This project is important for preserving the settings and viewsheds of the trail.

Background: The National Historic Trails are part of the National Landscape Conservation System. The Old Spanish Trail has three routes that run through the Las Vegas Valley and proposed areas of solar development.
