Interagency Coordination
ST-134 personnel facilitate coordination with other agencies to improve efficiencies, reduce cost of expenditures by consolidation or cooperative efforts, and communicate information to the geospatial community. Representing the Bureau on National initiatives ensures BLM has a voice on requirements, data standards, acquisition of data, technical issues and geospatial recommendations. We strategically facilitate and coordinate processes and communications to ensure efficient use of geospatial opportunities for the Bureau.
SWReGAP, NWReGAP
The Southwest and Northwest Regional Gap Analysis, are two projects in which BLM is a cooperating agency with USGS to develop a mapping project and assessment of biological diversity (biodiversity) are two major regions in the western U.S. The primary objective of Gap Analysis is to use a coordinated mapping approach to create a detailed, seamless database and maps of land cover, habitat for native terrestrial vertebrate species, and land stewardship. These layers of information are analyzed to develop maps showing species habitat and land cover that are underrepresented on lands managed for long-term conservation. These “gaps” in biodiversity and management can aid proactive conservation planning in support of long-term planning needs and other human interests. The objective is to produce a proactive, rather than a reactive, response to land management activities.
Southwest Regional Gap Analysis (SWReGAP) comprises the five-state region of Arizona, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, and Utah. This project was begun in 1998 and completed in the fall of 2005. The website can be found at: http://fws-nmcfwru.nmsu.edu/swregap/default.htm. For a NSTC Resource Note on the value of SWReGAP to the BLM, go to http://www.blm.gov/nstc/resourcenotes/rn81.html
Northwest Regional Gap Analysis (NWReGAP) comprises the states of Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming. This project is just under way, and will be completed in a few years. Combined with SWReGAP, this will cover 10 o the 12 "BLM states," excluding California and Alaska. A Southeast Regional Gap Analysis for the southeastern U.S. is also underway. National Digital Orthophoto Program (NDOP)
The NDOP is the principal coordination group of the federal government for the acquisition and use of orthoimagery within the United States. Orthoimagery data has been identified by the Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC), the National Spatial Data Infrastructure, and the President’s E-Government initiative Geospatial One Stop (GOS) as one of the principal geospatial framework themes for the federal government. As the recognized leader for coordinating orthoimagery the NDOP drives the establishment of policies, standards, and procedures that participating agencies use to cooperatively produce and share orthoimagery. Website: http://www.ndop.gov.
National Digital Elevation Program (NDEP)
The NDEP is the principal coordination group of the federal government for the acquisition and use of elevation and elevation products within the United States. Elevation data has been identified by the Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC), the National Spatial Data Infrastructure, and the President’s E-Government initiative Geospatial One Stop (GOS) as one of the principal geospatial framework themes for the federal government. As the recognized leader for coordinating elevation acquisition the NDEP drives the establishment of policies, standards, and procedures that participating agencies use to cooperatively produce and share elevation data. Inter-Agency Digital Imagery Working Group (IADIWG)
The goal of the IADIWG is to develop guidelines and standards for use by government agencies when contracting to ensure quality geospatial products are acquired from airborne digital sensors.
Geospatial Task Group
The Geospatial Task Group (GTG) is a coordinated point of contact dedicated to providing high-quality information and expertise on the use of geospatial data, standards, applications, and processes in support of interagency wildland fire management. The GTG is a subgroup of the Information Resource Management Working Team (IRMWT) under the National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG).
