The BLM public lands provide visitors with a vast array of recreational opportunities. These include hunting, fishing, camping, hiking, boating, hang gliding, off-highwayvehicle driving, mountain biking, birding, and visiting natural and cultural heritage sites.
The BLM’s National Science and Technology Center’s (NSTC) Branch of Resource Technology (ST-134) has the photogrammetric compilation techniques to produce digital base maps that can be used to develop various recreation sites. Branch Photogrammetry, Remote Sensing and GIS Specialist have been collecting and mapping natural resource and recreation data for many years. By giving the recreation professionals a highly detailed look at the existing terrain these photogrammetric site plans can be very helpful in developing recreation areas, campgrounds, parking areas, and providing suitable building locations. They also help manage the use of such facilities and provide information that will ensure that they are maintained. These maps can also be used to determine which areas have wilderness qualities which are to be preserved and which areas are suited to more intensive use that call for different facilities.
Off-highway vehicle (OHV) use is another established recreation use on public lands. Photogrammetry and remote sensing have been used through out the bureau to map these routes. These route maps are in color and they show OHV and recreation opportunities throughout the specific areas.

ST-134 also provides bureau-wide assistance in applying these advanced remote sensing and topographic mapping techniques. From software evaluations to assistance with how to use remote sensing and photogrammetry in your recreation projects; branch staff can help. Branch personnel will evaluate, develop, and demonstrate the use of advanced remote sensing and photogrammetric technology for a variety of recreational applications. We also work closely with other Federal Agencies to share ideas and technologies to the mutual benefit of all parties.
Branch personnel will also provide technical guidance to BLM managers and support personnel working with other agencies that are performing similar project work. There are many avenues users can take to acquire new recreation data products. The Branch can help navigate this maze to get you to the appropriate data you need in a timely fashion.
