Geospatial Support for Planning
Geospatial products and tools are used within all agency programs and Planning is no exception.
Geospatial data can be broken into two main categories, framework and custom.
Framework data themes by definition are general in nature and address areas of interest to the BLM as well as the general public and have been identified by Geospatial One Stop (GOS) as the following; Administrative Boundaries, Agriculture, Atmosphere, Biology, Business, Cadastral, Demographic, Elevation, Environment, Facilities, Geology, Health, Imagery and Base-maps, Inland Water, Locations, Oceans, Transportation, and Utilities. Data from some, if not all, of these categories are utilized during every BLM planning effort.
Custom data is geospatial data that is specific to BLM needs or our partner’s needs. Examples of custom data are vegetation databases, watershed assessments, mineral and range lease locations, boundaries of special designated areas such as Areas of Critical Environmental Concern (ACECs), fire rehab areas, Travel Management areas, Rights-of-Ways (ROWs), recreation locations, abandoned mine land, soil studies, and infrastructure. As with framework data, some of these categories are also utilized during every planning effort.
The Branch of Resource Technology assists BLM offices in acquiring, capturing, processing, creating, managing, and maintaining final products either in-house or by contract that fall within all of the above categories. And these efforts will always be done as efficiently and as cost effective as possible.
In addition to providing data for planning support, this office provides assistance to planning by identifying hardware and software refresh needs, identifying and providing training, and assisting with defining data standards and data stewards.
