Cultural Resources Management Support

Recent innovations in the field of close-range photogrammetry, image enhancement, and three dimensional modeling have direct applications to Cultural Resources management.

Applications of this new technology can greatly enhance the Bureaus capability to monitor delicate sites and quantify changes that may occur to these sites over time. Unlike artifacts delicate treasures such as rock art, structures, and paleontological features such as dinosaur tracksites, cannot be effectively collected and must be documented interpreted to the public in place. 3-D visualization provides resource specialists with a cost-effective, time-efficient, and user-friendly method that will preserve the visual value of a resources and support very precise measurements without adversely affecting the resource. Examples where this technology has been utilized to support BLM projects include the Red Gulch Dinosaur Tracksite, WY (link http://www.wy.blm.gov/rgdt/technol.htm  ) and documentation of petroglyphs in Utah and Wyoming.
