The following is the most commonly used paper stock used when printing BLM maps. The different types are listed in order of cost from the lowest to the highest:
White Offset Map Lithograph Finish, 90 g/m2 (60 lbs.) (JCP-E30)
Used for high quality multicolor offset printing of maps. This low cost paper is for everyday limited use and has limited folding durability.
White Matte Coated Offset Book, 105 g/m2 (70 lbs.) (JCP-A240)
Used for multicolor face and back offset printing of maps. This low cost paper is for everyday limited used. Its most common use is for visitor guides which is a map on one side and text and high quality photos on the other. The matte coat is preferred because it reduces the glare on the photos in outside use.
White Litho Coated Book, 105 g/m2 (70 lbs.) (JCP-A180)
Used for high quality multicolor face and back offset printing of books, pamphlets, and brochures. This is for everyday use and limited durability. It will tare easily along the folds and stick together when wet. The gloss finish is preferred when the product contains a number of photos.
White Chemical Wood Map Lithograph Finish, 83 g/m2 (22 lbs.) (JCP-E40)
Used for high quality multicolor offset printing of maps and other products requiring good folding endurance.
This is the preferred stock for everyday map use because of its durability. It is used when a water/moisture resistant paper is not required.
White Synthetic Paper, Polyart II, 90 & 145 g/m2 (60 & 75 lbs.)
This is the most expensive paper and sometimes poses problems with folding, ink drying and spreading because the ink is not absorbed into the plastic material. It is the most durable and water/moisture resistant of the group.
White High Wet Strength, Lithographic Finish, 90 g/m2 (24 lbs.) (JCP-E20)
Used for high quality multicolor offset printing of maps. This paper is sometimes hard to locate.
White Litho (Gloss) Cover, 215 g/m2 (80 lbs.) (JCP-L10)
Used for high quality multicolor face and back offset printing for covers for books etc.
