Original version was named BLMLAND01, and dated 2001. This dataset is authorized by the BLM Washington HQ Office as an official database of compiled surface public lands administered by the Bureau of Land Management. Because the recordation and filing of land records is dynamic and no national policy exists to require the compiliation of BLM lands, this dataset is considered an "interim" effort to compile BLM public lands data into a national dataset. Future efforts will develop a more current dataset using digital public land surveys and land ownership records. Purpose: To provide a nation-wide dataset of BLM administered surface lands. Supplemental_Information: Procedures_Used GIS ownership data files were solicited from each of the BLM's state offices in October 2003 as an effort to update this database and revise a new BLM Public Lands and Administrative Jurisdictions map. Not all the data was developed by BLM offices. Sometimes local state agency data was used. Most state's responded, some did not, and others responded that no significant change in their BLM lands warranted no new data. Therefore, the previous BLM data for that state was used. The new state datasets were named XXBLM04, (where XX is the state abbreviation) to reflect the date of the data. The previous (older) datasets were named XXBLM01, to reflect the older version. Data received from the states had to be converted to ArcInfo coverages, reprojected, and re-attributed to show two primary polygon attribues: BLM or not (null), and which state the polygon falls in. It should be noted that some BLM state offices administer BLM lands in adjacent states. See the BLM jurisdictions (BLMADMIN04) or the jurisdictions map on www.blm.gov/nstc/jurisdictions to review this jurisdictional responsibility. (null values for polygons in the "state" attribute reflect non-BLM polys shared between states). To make a best fit and avoid sliver polygons upon merging the individual state data, polys were snapped to a U.S. states boundary coverage created by USGS. State data had to be the same in structure to allow for merging of the data.
