This dry stacked panel shall be a minimum of 5 feet by 5 feet and be approved by the CO. Changes may be required before final approval. This sample panel is to remain until an entire mortared wall is approved.(#` 2.` ` Construct a sample wall panel a minimum of 4 feet by 4 feet; simulating the dry stacked panel showing mortar joints, bonds, horizontal layers and vertical facing. A second mortared sample wall panel may be required to achieve approval by the Contracting Office. Sample wall(s) shall not be built as part of the structure. The approved mortared wall shall be used as the%0*s's' standard of comparison for all stone veneer work. Do not alter, move, or destroy panel until the work is completed.(#` PART 2: PRODUCTS 2.1MATERIALS(# A.Natural Building Stone Veneer: Reference ASTM C 119. Natural building stone shall include stone that is either sawed, cut, split or otherwise finished or shaped, and shall specifically exclude molded, cast, or otherwise artificially aggregated units composed of fragments, and also crushed or broken stone.(# B.Physical Requirements: Stone supplied shall meet or exceed all four of the minimum physical property requirements as determined by the specific SDTM test method as specified below.(# 1.` ` Absorption By Weight: Maximum of 5 percent; according to ASTM C 97.(#` 2.` ` Density: Minimum of 140 pounds per cubit foot; according to ASTM C 97.(#` 3.` ` Compressive Strength: Minimum of 10,000 psi; according to ASTM C 170.(#` 4.` ` Modulus of Rupture: Minimum of 750 psi; according to ASTM C 99.(#` 5.` ` Stone Size Range: Lengths shall be random and similar to indications shown on the drawings. It is suggested that the Contractor view examples located at the BLM office in Albuquerque, New Mexico prior to obtaining samples for submittals.(#` 7.` ` Stone Pattern: The finished stone facing shall be random, broken coursed ashlar. Stones shall be sound, hard, and well shaped with no mechanical scars or tooling showing on the exterior natural strata faces.(#` C.Mortar: See Section 04101 Cement and Lime Mortars.(# D.Strap Ties: Shall be 22 ga minimum galvanized corrugated sheet metal 7x 7/8 inches.(# E.Water: Clean, potable and free from injurious amounts of acid alkalis, organic materials, or other harmful materials.(# PART 3: EXECUTION 3.1EXAMINATION(# A.Verification of Conditions: Inspect details of materials adjacent to stonework for articles to be built into stonework as it is laid up.(# B.Quantity of Stone: Ensure that plenty of stone is on site at all times for proper sizing and color selection.(#}&0*s's'Ԍ3.2INSTALLATION(# A.Strap Ties: Stone veneer shall be attached to the building wall with galvanized sheet metal strap ties spaced a maximum of 16 inches oc each way.(# B.Edges: When exterior masonry abuts a vertical or horizontal surface, individual stones shall be picked which facilitate the installation of caulking bead and mortar joint.(# C.Protection: Protect uncompleted walls be covering at the end of each workday and for shutdown periods. The cover shall be a strong, securely attached, nonstaining weather resistant membrane overhanging stonework by at least 24 inches. When work resumes, clean top surface of stone of loose mortar and thoroughly dampen. Where new masonry joins partially or totally set masonry, remove loose mortar and dampen.(# D.Face Appearance: Exposed faces of stone shall be weathered. Broken faces exposed to view are not acceptable. Lay stones so face with most figuring or lichen/moss (in that order of priority) is exposed. Stones having equal faces shall be laid with darker face exposed.(# E.Procedure:(# 1.` ` Construct walls to the same standard as the approved mortared sample wall.(#` 2.` ` Thoroughly wet stones before laying.(#` 3.` ` Set each stone on its natural bed, level, and true to line, in a full bed of mortar; tap to full, even bearing. Fill joints with mortar leaving no voids. Mortar shall be slushed in the space between the back facing of the stone and the concrete masonry wall. Keep exterior faces of stone free of mortar.(#` 4.` ` Set stones vertically starting at the bottom of each wall on the ledge provided.(#` 5.` ` Build all walls straight and plumb on the exterior face.(#` 6.` ` Lay stones informally with broken joints and a mixture of the various sizes.(#` 7.` ` Make joints a minimum of 3/8 inch, to a maximum of approximately 3/4 inch, and fill with mortar.(#` 8.` ` Stone joints shall be slightly concave; point with cement when mortar is nearly dry. After pointing joints, rub with a stiff broom or brush to remove trowel sheen. Fill holes and joints, and cut out defective joints and repaint where necessary.(#` 9.` ` Set only the stones that will remain in place without slipping.(#` 10.` ` Work horizontally across the wall to allow stones to set before applying additional stones above them.(#` 11.` ` After completion, thoroughly clean and scrub stone with stone fiber brushes using mild soap and water, and completely rinse immediately after scrubbing. Begin at the top and work down. Take care to preserve lichen or moss if applicable.(#` 3.3PROTECTION(# A.Requirements: (# 1.` ` Protect stone faces against staining.(#` 2.` ` Keep stones as clean as possible.(#` 3.` ` No soil backfill shall be placed against stone for a minimum of 14 days or until stone is completed and cleaned.(#` /%0*s's'Ԍ4.` ` Aesthetic appearance, color and pattern are important.
