The Contractor shall not compact the drainage field area.(# C.Unsuitable Excavated Material: Shall be removed from the site and spread evenly in an area [approved by the Contracting Officer.] [shown on the drawings].(# ***************************************************** IT IS CRITICAL THAT THE DRAIN FIELD SOIL NOT BE COMPACTED OR WORKED WET, UNLESS IT IS A GRANULAR MATERIAL OR UNLESS THE DESIGN SUBSTANTIALLY REPLACES NATIVE MATERIAL WITH SELECT MATERIAL. ***************************************************** D.Bed Preparation: All smeared or compacted surfaces in the gravel zone shall be raked to a depth of 1 inch, and all loose material shall be removed before the gravel is placed in the bed.(# E.Sand: Shall be placed as shown on the drawings after the excavated site is approved by the Contracting Officer. Do not compact the excavated site. [Compacted material shall be tilled to a depth of 6 inches.](# F.Drainage Field Absorption Bed Aggregate: Shall be placed as shown on the drawings after the installation of the sand has been approved by the Contracting Officer.(# G.Drainage Field Piping: The bottom of the bed shall be level and free of bumps, holes, or debris. The perforated lines shall be laid true level without low spots or sags, with perforations facing downward. Avoid the mixing of soil and fines into the bedding during placement of drainfield piping and backfilling. Heavy construction equipment shall not pass over the lines during backfilling or other construction operations. Do not cover the pipe or backfill the bed until the Contracting Officer has inspected and approved the work. Cap the ends of the drainage field piping.(# H.Soil Barrier: Shall be one piece of fabric, placed to extend at least 4 inches up each side of the bed. If fabric of sufficient width cannot be obtained, the fabric shall lap a minimum of 1 foot at all seams, and shall be rolled or laid according to the manufacturer's}&0*s's' instructions. The soil barrier shall not be backfilled or covered until it is inspected and approved by the Contracting Officer.(# I.Backfilling: Shall begin after the soil barrier is in place and approved by the Contracting Officer. Backfill material shall consist of native soil passing a 2 inch sieve. It shall be carefully placed and shall include an overfill as shown on Drawings to allow for settling. Special care must be taken to prevent compacting the material or disturbing the lines.(# J.Monitor Well Pipe: Install pipes to a [____]ft depth with [____] ft above ground at locations indicated on the drawings. The pipe shall have a removable cap. Excavation and backfill shall conform to Section 02224 Excavating, Backfilling, and Compacting for Structures.(# M.Appurtenances: Shall be installed according to the specifications and the manufacturer's instructions.(# 3.4FIELD QUALITY CONTROL(# A.Testing: The Contractor shall conduct the field performance and acceptance tests of the drainage field lines, septic tank, pipe connections to the septic tank, bar screen, and siphon chambers. The Contractor shall furnish all necessary equipment, labor, and materials. Tests shall be conducted in the presence of the Contracting Officer. When leakage exceeds the limits of the applicable leakage allowance or if testing otherwise shows the installation to be less than satisfactory, the sewer line and/or appurtenances shall be replaced or repaired and retested at no additional expense to the Government until the leakage is within acceptable limits and until all components perform satisfactorily.(# B.Bar Screen and Septic Tank Battery: Testing of this group shall demonstrate the screening and swingfunctioning of the bar screen by introducing two waterfilled balloons, no greater than 3 inches in diameter, into each of the four dump ports and flushing with clear water. Balloons shall be recoverable in the screen chamber. Clear water flow shall be continued until the tanks are filled to the flow lines. The initial water fill shall be maintained for at least 12 hours. After this "soak" period, the water shall be brought to the flow line on each new tank. Over a subsequent 4 hour period the water level shall drop no more than 1/2 inch below the flow line for acceptance.(# C.Diversion ChamberSewerSiphon Chamber: Testing for this group shall start by the introduction of flow into the diversion chamber. This flow may be clear water or normal sewage flow from the existing 8 inch PVC sewer line (left intact during construction of the diversion chamber), at the Contractor's option. Performance of the diversion gate shall be demonstrated by the Contractor at this point if line sewer is used. Acceptable performance shall consist in gate placement and removal by hand in each position (during flow) with essential and substantial diversion of flow occurring. If clear water testing is}&0*s's' done, gate acceptance demonstration may be done after the siphon test. Acceptable performance of the siphons in the siphon chamber shall be demonstrated by filling the siphon chamber at least four times showing that each siphon will function to empty the chamber and that the siphons will operate alternately.(# 3.5PROTECTION(# A.Requirements: After construction of the drainage field and during the remainder of the construction, the Contractor shall mark the area of the drainage field and prevent any vehicles from operating in the area.(# 3.6TRAINING OF GOVERNMENT PERSONNEL(# A.Requirements: Shall be according to Section 01780 Closeout Submittals.(#  PART 4: MEASUREMENT AND PAYMENT 4.1METHOD OF MEASUREMENT(# ***************************************************** WHEN A "LUMP SUM" CONTRACT IS USED, DELETE THE TITLE PART 4: MEASUREMENT AND PAYMENT, AND BOTH ARTICLES FROM THIS SECTION.
