The base slab shall be not less than six inches in thickness and shall be cast with the wall section in such a manner to achieve a completely watertight structure. Reinforcement of the base slab shall have a minimum area of 0.12 square inch per foot of width in both directions (90 degrees). The steel shall be placed not less than two inches or more than four inches from the top, and shall extend into the wall of the manhole section and be tied to the longitudinal steel.(# D.Openings To Receive Pipes: Shall be circular, tapered in toward the inside of the section, and shall be held to the minimum size possible to accommodate the pipe to be inserted and to effectively seal the joint. Openings for pipe up to 21 inches in diameter may be provided in 48 inch base sections.(# E.Riser Sections: Shall be reinforced [precast] [cast-in-place] concrete pipe sections. When standard sections are used they shall be manufactured in multiples of 12 inches at the option of the manufacturer. The manufacturer may produce each manhole riser and base in one section when approved in writing by the Contracting Officer.(# F.Cone Top Section: Shall be [concentric] [eccentric] Cones with diameter at small end of [ ] inches shall be not less than [ ] inches in height. Repair of defects by welding, or by the use of "smooth-on" or similar materials will not be permitted.(# C.Cover: Shall be non-watertight and have the word "SEWER" in 2 inch raised letters.(# D.Bituminous Coating: Shall be applied to all faces. The Contracting Officer shall inspect and approve castings prior to painting.(# 2.5CEMENT MORTAR(# A.Cement: Shall conform with the requirements of ASTM C 150, Type II.(# B.Sand: Shall conform with the requirements of ASTM C 144.(# C.Mortar: Shall be composed of one part cement and three parts sand. Where water is encountered at the site, cast-in-place base or monolithic structures shall be placed on a one-piece waterproof membrane, so placed as to prevent any movement of water into the fresh concrete.(# %0*s's'ԌD.Bedding: Shall be a well-graded granular bedding material conforming to the requirements for sewer pipe bedding material but not less than 4 inches in thickness and extending either to the limits of the excavation or to a minimum of 12 inches outside the outside limits of the base section. In the latter case, the balance of the excavated area shall be filled with borrow well tamped to the level of the top of the bedding to positively prevent any lateral movement of the bedding when the weight of the manhole is placed upon it. The bedding material shall be firmly tamped and made smooth and level to assure uniform contact and support of the manhole.(# E.Pre-Cast Base Section Placement: Shall be placed on the prepared bedding so as to be fully and uniformly supported in true alignment and making sure that entering pipes can be inserted on proper grade.(# 3.2MANHOLE INSTALLATION(# A.Cast-In-Place Bases: Shall be at least 6 inches in thickness and shall extend at least 6 inches radially outside of the manhole wall. Concrete shall have a minimum 3,000 psi 28-day compression strength as provided in Section 03310 - Structural Concrete. The first pre-cast section shall be placed on the cast-in-place base structure before the base has taken initial set, and shall be carefully adjusted to true grade and alignment with all inlet pipes properly installed so as to form an integral, watertight unit; or the section shall be mortared into a suitable groove provided in the top of the cast-in-place base. The first section shall be uniformly supported by the base concrete, and shall not bear directly on any of the pipes.(# B.Lift Holes: Shall be thoroughly wetted and then completely filled with mortar, smoothed and loose material removed both inside and out to ensure watertightness. All steel loops must be removed and covered with mortar, smoothed and pointed. Pre-cast sections shall be placed and aligned to provide vertical sides and vertical alignment of the ladder rungs. The completed manhole shall be true to dimensions, and watertight.(# C.Final Elevation and Tilt of Cover: Shall conform to the restored street surface. Manhole castings shall be readjusted to meet uniform street grades. Warping of surfacing to meet grade of castings will not be allowed. Not less than 8 inches or more than 24 inches shall be provided between the top of the cone or slab and the underside of the manhole casting ring for adjustment of the casting to street grade.(# D.Compaction: Backfill around the manhole and extending at least one pipe length into each trench shall be hand placed and tamped with borrow up to an elevation of 12 inches above the crown of all entering pipes.(# E.Channels: Shall be made to conform accurately to the sewer grade and shall be brought together smoothly with well rounded junctions. Channel sides shall be carried up vertically to the crown elevation of the various pipes, and the concrete shelf between channels shall be smoothly finished and warped evenly with slopes to drain.(# F.Poured In Place Manholes: Shall conform with the applicable requirements of Section 03310 - Structural Concrete. The design shall be furnished by the Contractor for approval by the Contracting Officer according to Section 01330 - Submittal Procedures. (#}&0*s's'ԌG.Pre-Cast Barrel Sections: Shall be set and sealed with rubber or premolded plastic gaskets. Gaskets shall be installed according to the manufacturers instructions.
