Specifying the color of objects such as these storage tanks may be the most important decision you make as a VRM designer. Many things must be taken into consideration. It is generally better to "tie" the object to the ground rather than trying to match a sky color. The Standard Environmental Color Chart is available to aid you in proper color matching. Remember other considerations may be important, such as the reflectivity of the object, or the various effects of lighting during different times of day, or season.

Color Exercise

Your boss has forwarded to you an application for a right-of-way grant and a permit to build five oil storage tanks on public lands. The applicant has proposed to paint the tanks white, and your boss wants to know if there is another color that you want to recommend instead. The applicant has indicated that he would consider using one of the following color choices as an alternative color selection if we do not like the proposed color. What is your recommendation?

Proposed Color of the StorageTanks

Here are your choices for this project. Let's try them one by one.

How about sky blue? Should we attempt to match the color of the sky?
