Ranger Hikes and Programs at El Malpais NCA

Ranger guided walks and other activities are offered throughout the NCA.  Schedules of activities can be found at the Northwest New Mexico Visitor Center located in Grants, the BLM Ranger Station located on NM 117, or the National Park Service Information Center located off Highway 53.

Rangers can provide natural and cultural history talks for organized groups.  Please contact BLM in advance to make arrangements. Education groups are welcome and activities can be conducted with school groups if arrangements are made in advance.

Check out these fun events at BLM El Malpais National Conservation Area!  Call Ranger Jenn (505-287-6602) for more information

Art Walk - Third Sunday of every month
Join Ranger Jenn and meet at the Northwest New Mexico Visitor Center at 9 AM.  Caravan to different sites where artistic-minded folks can set up their easels and let nature inspire.  You bring the art supplies.  The art walk should be finished by noon or 1:00 PM, but artists are encouraged to linger if they wish.

Night Walk – July 6 & August 31
At 8:00 p.m., meet Ranger Jenn at La Ventana Natural Arch (18 miles south on Highway 117 from Exit 89).  From there, we will walk slowly the ½ mile trail and make many stops to discover the wonders of the nocturnal world.  This is a great program for families and kids of all ages.  We will discuss how nocturnal creatures use their senses, experiment on our finding, and wait for our eyes to adjust to see the stars!

We hope to see you there!
