Wildlife Partnerships

From big game to invertebrates, New Mexico prides itself in its abundant wildlife. As stewards of public lands, BLM New Mexico works hard to assure that the lands we are entrusted to manage provide healthy habitats for our wildlife populations. Our success is based, in large part, to the many partners that work with us on this effort.

Habitat Stamp Program

The Habitat Stamp Program, authorized under the Federal Sikes Act, provides for the collection of a fee, currently $5.25, from each state hunting, fishing and trapping license sold to fund habitat improvement projects on both BLM and Forest Service administered lands. 

Since the program was initiated in 1987, 525 habitat enhancement projects have been implemented on BLM administered lands throughout the state. These projects include:
258 wildlife watering units

    • 46 miles of fence modification
    • 78,000 acres of Rx fire
    • 29,000 acres of mechanical/chemical treatment
    • 1,000 acres of riparian-wetland habitat enhancement
    • 10 miles of road reclamation

This partnership has been critical to improving wildlife habitats on our public lands. The Sikes Act is up for reauthorization in 2010.

Partnerships with Wildlife Organizations

National Fish and Wildlife Federation 

The National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF) was created by Congress in 1984 to preserve and restore our nation’s native wildlife species and habitats. NFWF directs public conservation dollars to the most pressing environmental needs and matches those investments with private funds. BLM has worked with the Foundation to identify worthy projects for funding consideration, assist the Foundation in assessing project proposals, and act as the Foundation's eyes and ears by conducting project site visits and evaluating project success.

 

Quail Unlimited

Quail Unlimited (QU) has partnered with BLM New Mexico for over 30 years. Local chapters provide both monetary and in-kind contributions for wildlife restoration projects that are done on public lands.  While restoration and/or stabilization of native quail populations are the primary focus of the QU partnership, all projects are constructed in a manner that benefits all wildlife species in an area.

 

Answer the Call

Grants from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation support Quail Unlimited’s "Answer the Call" initiative.  This program provides competitive cost-share funds for projects that promote native quail habitat conservation on public lands throughout the nation.

 

Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation    

The Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation’s mission is to ensure the future of elk, other wildlife and their habitat. Through volunteer efforts and conservation grants, the Elk Foundation has worked with BLM to improve wildlife habitat on public lands throughout the state.

 

Peregrine Fund  

The Peregrine Fund’s work is to preserve birds of prey in nature.  Every project they participate in is in cooperation with other people and groups. BLM has worked closely with the Peregrine Fund on the successful reintroduction of Aplomado Falcons to New Mexico. 

 

 

National Wild Turkey Foundation 

The conservation of wild turkeys is a primary mission of the National Wild Turkey Foundation.  Working with BLM and other partners in New Mexico, the Foundation’s volunteers have worked on both habitat restoration projects and reintroductions of wild turkeys.
