Continental Divide Trail Celebration
Continental Divide Trail enthusiasts gathered outside of Hatchita, NM on November 14, 2009 to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Continental Divide Trail. Approximately 50 people attended the event, braving cold and windy conditions. Attendees included trail enthusiasts (including two CDT through hikers - one currently on his trek), local ranchers, state government representatives, members of the Continental Divide Trail Alliance, representatives of members of Congress, and officials from the US Border Patrol and the Bureau of Land Management. Both Senators Bingaman and Udall prepared letters which were read by their representatives. Senator Bingaman specifically highlighted the importance of the National Landscape Conservation System to the BLM and the nation's public lands. After a number of speeches, a barbecue lunch was provided. The event included a lot of socializing, walks on the Continental Divide Trail, and even a geocaching exercise.
