BLM Plans Pile Burning Near Pie Town

Socorro, NM -- The Socorro Field Office of the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) plans to continue burning slash piles near Pie Town, New Mexico, from December 15th through March 15th, weather permitting. The slash piles are located on 350 acres immediately south and east of Pie Town, with another five acres of piles located immediately west of Pie Town and north of Highway 60.

The objective of these burns is to remove slash (limbs and branches) created as part of a previous thinning project.

Fire crews plan to ignite piles for up to four days per week until the project is completed. Some smoke may be visible in the burn area for up to a week after ignition operations are completed. Firefighters will monitor the burn until the piles are no longer burning. Smoke from this burn is not expected to impact Highway 60, but variations in wind direction may result in brief periods of reduced visibility. Motorists are advised to use caution when driving through the area.

Questions about the burn should be directed to BLM’s Socorro Field Office at (575) 835-0412.

The BLM manages more land - over 245 million acres - than any other Federal agency. This land, known as the National System of Public Lands, is primarily located in 12 Western states, including Alaska. The Bureau, with a budget of about $1 billion, also administers 700 million acres of sub-surface mineral estate throughout the nation. The BLM's multiple-use mission is to sustain the health and productivity of the public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations. The Bureau accomplishes this by managing such activities as outdoor recreation, livestock grazing, mineral development, and energy production, and by conserving natural, historical, cultural, and other resources on public lands.
