Kasha-Katuwe Tent Rocks National Monument Closed to Dogs

Albuquerque–The Bureau of Land Management will not allow dogs at the Kasha-Katuwe Tent Rocks National Monument effective May 23, 2009, due to concerns about public safety at the Monument.

The BLM issued a temporary restriction order this week, which will remain in effect until the agency prepares a plan to resolve the issue over the long term.  The public will have an opportunity to comment on the issue of dogs and public safety during the BLM’s planning process, which will be completed within the next two years.

Dogs for the visually impaired or other assisted needs are exempted from this order.  Other visitors are advised to leave their dogs at home. There are currently no kennel facilities at the Monument or the Pueblo de Cochiti.

For further information about the temporary restriction order, please contact:

  • Jackie Leyba, Kasha-Katuwe Tent Rocks Monument Manager, at  505.761.8955 or
  • Robert Pecos, Pueblo de Cochiti Monument Staffing Coordinator, at 505.269.7455
