October 2014 Oil and Gas Lease Sale
The BLM is deferring for further analysis 16 parcels nominated for oil and gas leasing in eastern Rio Arriba County, New Mexico. The parcels total about 13,300 acres of Federal mineral estate underlying mixed surface ownership near Cebolla, New Mexico. The parcels will not be considered for lease during the BLM New Mexico’s October 2014 lease sale as previously anticipated.
This decision follows an extensive information gathering effort by the BLM and its cooperators to understand potential conflicts associated with these lease parcels. This effort included a 45-day public scoping period during which a substantial amount of comments and recommendations were provided.
A study relating to the area’s geology and hydrology, as well as reevaluation of oil and gas mineral potential in eastern Rio Arriba County, is currently being developed as part of the Reasonable Foreseeable Development scenario being conducted for the San Juan Basin under the direction of the BLM’s Farmington Field Office. Once completed, the information provided by this study will help the BLM to make future decisions regarding leasing in this area.
