Copper Flat Mine Environmental Impact Statement (Pending)

The Bureau of Land Management is undertaking a comprehensive environmental study of the impact of the planned construction, operation, and mine reclamation of the Copper Flat Mine near Hillsboro, New Mexico. Initial public scoping was conducted in February 2012 with two public meetings in Hillsboro and Truth or Consequences and an associated public comment period. The Copper Flat Mine Scoping Report is posted under “Documents and Information."

The scoping results were used to develop alternatives to the project’s proposed action.  The proposed action and the alternatives are now being analyzed for potential environmental effects. Because water use was a commonly identified public concern, the mining proponent has conducted testing of aquifer characteristics that will be used to produce a thorough hydrology report and associated groundwater model in Spring 2013.

Once the groundwater and water use information has been evaluated for potential environmental effects, a Draft EIS will be distributed for public review and comment. The Draft EIS is expected to be available Winter 2014.
