This layer represents a compilation of data from many sources, each with their own scale and quality limitations. It has been analyzed against other GIS layers also having their scale and quality limitations. Significant work has been done to map locations so that protected lands are avoided wherever possible, and to encode the GIS and tabular information provided by the many sources as accurately as possible.
The target maximum scale for the layer during development was 1:24,000. However, protected land boundaries and many other layers necessary to bound the corridor locations are simply not available at 1:24,000 scale or better for the 11-state region. Even the best available surface mangement agency layer used to determine which lands are federal has some content developed from sources with scales less than 1:24,000.

This layer was compiled from many sources, and is based on a set of centerline connections between energy supply and demand areas. Polygons in the layer were made by:
1) Creating a butter around a centerline at a defined width,
2) Integrating polygons received from a project participant,
3) Combining or editing the above to avoid protected lands and to correct topology issues, and/or
4) Truncating or removing areas found to occur on non-federal land.

To add attributes needed for analysis, the sec368zone layer was intersected with 1) surface management agency, 2) BLM field office, and 3) state layers. In the output layer the corridors were then split at each location the agency, field office, or state changed, and the values from those input layers were included. The table was subsequently cleaned up to remove extra fields that were present in the input layers but not needed in the output.
