United States Department of the Interior BUREAU OF LAND MANAGEMENT Fire and Aviation 3833 South Development Avenue Boise, Idaho 83705-5354 June 28, 2007 In Reply Refer To: 1400-735 (FA-202) P EMS Transmission 06/28/07 Instruction Memorandum No. FA IM 2007-019 Expires: 09/30/08 To: All Fire and Aviation Employees From: Deputy Assistant Director (NIFC), Fire and Aviation Subject: Workplace Violence Program Area: Employee Respect and Conduct Ethics – Workplace Violence Purpose: This Instruction Memorandum (IM) transmits the Bureau of Land Management’s (BLM) policy regarding workplace violence. Policy/Action: Violence, threats, harassment, intimidation, and other disruptive behavior in our workplace will not be tolerated; that is, all reports of incidents will be taken seriously and will be dealt with appropriately. Such behavior can include oral or written statements, gestures or expressions that communicate a direct or indirect threat of physical harm. Individuals who commit such acts may be removed from the premises and may be subject to disciplinary action and/or criminal penalties. We need your cooperation to implement this policy effectively and maintain a safe working environment. Do not ignore violent, threatening, harassing, intimidating or other disruptive behavior. If you observe or experience such behavior by anyone on bureau premises, whether he or she is a bureau employee, report it immediately to a supervisor or manager. Supervisors and managers who receive such reports should seek advice from the Human Resources (HR) Office at 208-387-5527 regarding investigating the incident and initiating appropriate action. (Please Note: Threats or assaults that require immediate attention by security or police should be reported first to security or to police by dialing 911.) Efforts made by supervisors and specialists in dealing with violent, threatening, harassing, intimidating or other disruptive behavior in our workplace will be supported and monitored to ensure this policy is being implemented effectively. Timeframe: This IM is effective immediately. Budget Impact: N/A Background: It is the policy of the Bureau of Land Management Fire and Aviation to promote a safe environment for employees. The Bureau is committed to working with employees to maintain a work environment free from violence, threats of violence, harassment, intimidation and other disruptive behavior.
