Subject: Training Requirements for Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Fire Equipment

Drivers

Program Area: Fire Management

Purpose: Transmit supplemental training requirements for BLM fire equipment drivers.

Policy/Action: Training for all regular drivers of engines, water tenders, helicopter support vehicles, crew carriers and fuel tenders must include successful completion of the instructional objectives stated in the attachment, titled, “BLM Fire Equipment Driver Instructional Objectives.”

 

For the purposes of this policy, a regular driver is defined as an employee whose duties include driving fire equipment on a regular basis. This may include highway, off-road, city, mobile attack and extreme terrain driving.

 

Time Frame: Effective immediately.

Budget Impact: Each state will cover training costs within FY budget allocations.

Background: The Fire and Aviation Division of Fire Operations, in coordination with the BLM National Fire Operations Committee, is undertaking efforts to improve BLM fire program driving performance. This policy is part of that undertaking.

Manual/Handbook Sections Affected: This IM supplements existing BLM driving policy, including standards stated in the Interagency Standards for Fire and Fire Aviation Operations.

Coordination: These requirements have been coordinated with the Fire and Aviation Divisions of Fire Operations, Fire Management Training, and the BLM National Fire Operations Committee.
