Subject: National Wildland Fire Safety Award Nominations DD: 11/05/07

The safety and health of our employees is the number one priority of the Bureau of Land
Management (BLM). As we pursue maintaining a safety culture within the fire program, it is
important to recognize individuals or organizations that have made significant contributions to
firefighter safety. The 2007 fire season was very active, and considering the number of exposure
hours, the wildland firefighter safety record was commendable. Many significant contributions
were made by managers, fire staffs, and firefighters to ensure that safety was not compromised.
The National Wildland Fire Safety Award recognizes significant contributions made to the
improvement of firefighter safety and to the enhancement of the safety culture within the fire
program, as well as to outstanding leadership in promoting fire safety. The selected nominee
will be recognized and will receive a monetary award. A selection panel will be convened,
which will include field, state, and national office personnel. This panel will forward their
recommendations for the award recipient and two runners-up to be approved by the Deputy
Assistant Director, Fire and Aviation.

Please submit nominations for any group or individual directly to Michelle Ryerson, Fire Safety
Program Manager, via e-mail at Michelle_Ryerson@nifc.blm.gov.

Nominations should include: nominee’s name and title, office address, telephone number,
supervisor’s name and telephone number, a narrative (not to exceed one typewritten page) of
how the individual(s) significantly contributed to or demonstrated special achievement to the
BLM’s fire safety program.

Nominations for the National Wildland Fire Safety Award present an excellent opportunity to
recognize significant achievements of BLM employees. If you have any questions, please
contact Michelle Ryerson at (208) 387-5175. I encourage you to recognize those who have
significantly improved fire safety.
