Subject: Appropriate Management Response

 

Appropriate Management Response (AMR), is defined as:

“Any specific action suitable to meet fire management unit (FMU) objectives. Typically, the AMR ranges across a spectrum of tactical operations (from monitoring to intensive

management actions). The AMR is developed by using fire management unit strategies and objectives identified in the fire management plan.” (Interagency Strategy for the

Implementation of Federal Wildland Fire Management Policy, June, 2003)

This definition is included in Chapter 9 of Interagency Standards for Fire and Fire Aviation Operations (the Red Book), which also places AMR within the context of the overall fire management planning and response process. Although there are many AMR statements and documents (formal and informal) currently in circulation, it is important that Bureau of Land Management fire managers use the Red Book as the primary source for understanding and applying AMR in order to ensure consistency and coordination in our fire program.

 

The attached statement by the National Fire and Aviation Executive Board provides additional clarification to current fire policy regarding AMR. This clarification will be incorporated into the 2008 Red Book.
